About the Income Tax Calculator (FY 2025-26)

Calculate your income tax liability for FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27) under either the new or old regime, with a full breakdown of slabs, the Section 87A rebate, surcharge, and 4% health & education cess.

How it works

Tax is computed slab by slab on income after the standard deduction (₹75,000 new regime, ₹50,000 old regime): each slab's rate applies only to the income falling within that band. Section 87A gives a full rebate up to ₹60,000 (new regime, income ≤ ₹12L) or ₹12,500 (old regime, income ≤ ₹5L), zeroing out tax below those thresholds. Surcharge applies above ₹50L (10–25%, up to 37% under the old regime above ₹5Cr), and 4% cess applies to tax plus surcharge.

Frequently asked questions

Which regime should I choose?

The new regime has lower slab rates and a higher standard deduction but removes most exemptions (HRA, 80C, home loan interest). The old regime keeps those deductions but taxes at higher rates. If you claim significant deductions — a home loan, HRA, a filled 80C — the old regime often wins; otherwise the new regime usually does. Use the Compare mode to check on your own numbers.

What is the Section 87A rebate?

A full rebate on tax payable (not on income) if total income is at or below the threshold — ₹12 lakh under the new regime, ₹5 lakh under the old regime. It effectively means no tax is payable up to that income level, though a slightly higher income can still owe some tax due to the marginal relief calculation at the threshold edge.

When does surcharge apply?

Surcharge is an additional charge on the tax itself once total income crosses ₹50 lakh: 10% above ₹50L, 15% above ₹1Cr, 25% above ₹2Cr, and — only under the old regime — 37% above ₹5Cr (capped at 25% under the new regime since Budget 2023).
